A cultural player makes use of the company’s marketing and communication base (and vice versa)

Artists and culture companies are presented on a company’s websites, possibly complemented by presentations of their art work, e.g. photographs or drawings. The selection of suitable arts objects can be arranged by a curator. The presented artists can be changed every year. Alternatively, the business company will represent one artist or culture association in its development over several years.

Example: Gallery on the website of a personal and business consulting company: www.justhuman.de

This principle can even be extended further with the business company being presented on culture websites in advance, possibly even in an artistic way.

Benefit: Involvement / addressing of new target groups and, thus, increased public attention for the art works/artist/company.

Provision of new common products: wine art and calendar

A culture association and business company create, jointly, a new product as, for example, new design for cars, a common calendar or wine art

Wine art: Pupils and members of an art school (alternatively: artists) in Rostock designed wine bottle labels, painted pictures with wine and art objects made of wine barrels - all of them presented in all hotels and shops, in which the wind sales company (Steder und Harms) sells its products. The art objects and pictures are available for purchase by interested people.

Calendars: Original paintings of artists or pupils of art schools are used to make a calendar issued by a business company and both, the art school and the company, use it as a gift for clients.

Delights and Theatre - a common event of a theater group and a restaurant

Common performance of a restaurant and a private theatre group which takes place once a month and related to differing topics. The dinner or catering buffet and the performance are related to this topic, i.e. the visitors get a theatre performance and, subsequently, a dinner at the same evening. It is even possible that be the dinner is the theater performance, a little bit like event catering but with more qualitative performance.

Incentive events, voluntary days

This kind common event is a very efficient one: Artists meet working life and company employees meet arts.

Example: One voluntary day for staff members of the mobile provider O2 takes place once a year at the media school Rostock in cooperation with Rostock’s art school. Being there, the staff members of the provider O2 commented on the marketings strategy and suggested improvements for the website of the culture institution. In addition, they tested the information and communication plus guidance system at the house of art in Rostock. As a result, the culture institutions optimized all systems with the aim to improve the situation for their visitors. In advance, the artists of media and art schools arranged creative plays and process tasks for the participants in the voluntary day, taught them on creative methods trained in the process of creating a short film or a drawing. Thus, the O2 employees learned methods to make a note or to develop new ideas etc.

The artist Andreas Goertz works as coach in business companies. He is coaching the staff on communication processes and cooperation methods by using the methods used in art production processes (e.g. drawing, building a sculpture or creating a short film) to solve communication problems. Thus, the participants in his trainings learned new strategies to solve the communication problems. For example a second drawing of an object will be made over the first drawing of this object from another point of view of it. Alternatively, the first drawing is turned on its head and a second one is painted on the surface - a widely used procedure in artistic education. When using it for the first time, the trainees did not like this method but later on learned the potentials it provided for communication methods. They learned that it is difficult to make changes and leave established paths. In the company Bayer AG, the artist had coached 250 members of the company management to establish a collective and cooperative management style. Looking back, the company estimates the benefit for the company to amount to 3 Mio. €.

Godfathers of Culture (Kulturpaten / City of Leipzig)

The godfathers of culture are companies, entrepreneurs and experts from the business, which support cultural and artistic work of institutions, projects and artists of all genres. Through voluntary sponsorships they support culture e.g. in the development of structures and drafts, in planning and realizing projects and in other specified questions. The godfathers of culture analyse problems and develop solutions in close cooperation with the cultural players. This means coaching, project management, accountancy, by providing a marketing concept, by supporting public relations or by giving legal advice. They help to promote the culture with knowledge - but without money. In these sponsorships the business experts offer their knowledge for the solution of concrete tasks and at the same time gain new experiences, perspectives and contacts from the culture. Both sides get to know the thinking of the other. This creative exchange releases new impulses and strengthened a long lasting networking of business and culture. The initiative "godfathers of culture" is based on examples from Cologne und Hamburg and is organized as a non-profit company, which is supported by sponsors.

Usedom Music Festival (Usedomer Musik Festival / Island of Usedom)

The Usedom Music Festival takes place on the island of usedom and is dedicated to the art of the baltic region. Every year in fall the festival introduce one of the ten countries, which are located around the Baltic Sea. The festival offers classical concerts in different locations like churches, castles, mansions, galleries and hotels on the whole island of usedom. The organizer of the festival is the non-profit association Usedomer Musikfreunde.

This high quality representation of music of the Batlic Sea region serves as a targeted and season-lengthening measure as well as a supra-regional advertisement for the island of Usedom and the region Western Pomerania. 70 percent of all guests indicate that this festival is the main or secondary reason for their journey (Rolf Seelige-Steinhoff / Hotelier).

The benefits for the business on the island are indirect promotion, additional attention because of prominent artists and guests and good networking.

Market Place of Good Deals (Marktplatz der guten Geschäfte / City of Greifswald)

The market place is a special method to bring together companies and non-profit organizations at one day for a limited time: Like on a market the participants deal with supply and demand. Companies can offer their manpower, business competence or logistic. The non-profit organizations offer cooperation in projects and an unusual insight into other liveworlds. The different partners get to know and trust each other and can plan together social projects. In this way the companies show social responsibility and the nonprofit organisations can realize projects with additional resources.

The companies can:

Open Art (Kunst:Offen / Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania)

Kunst:Offen is a presentation of art which takes place annually on Pentecost in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In this year (26.05. - 28.05.) over 500 artists (above all painter, graphic artists, sculptors, photographers and potters) will open more then 300 studios and workshops for guests. Kunst:Offen offers the possibility to enjoy art and crafts on the place of development. The Volksbank Raiffeisenbank has been a partner of Kunst:Offen for several years as main-sponsor.

Club 100 (Island of Usedom)

The main target of the club is to support the economic development of the region between the island of Usedom and the two cities Greifswald and Neubrandenburg through making known the island as an outstanding tourist destination.

Several companies from one region support together culture and sports (here above all: a handball team in the 3rd league). The club-membership offers more advantages than normal sport-sponsoring through visiting the supported festivals as VIPs, the utilization of marketing activities and maintenance of relationships. This example may also work with cultural institutions and projects.

Mykolines

Mykolines (st. Mykolas name day) is celebrated on the 29th of September. It used to be celebration of harvesting. During the time of landlords Oginskiai, Mykolines in Rietavas used to be celebrated for the whole week. Many guests visited estate and lots of events took place. Estate park on this week was open to local inhabitants. Nowadays the tradition of celebrating Mykolines continue, though it is shorter – take two days. It attracts lot of local inhabitants and guests. Fairs, concerts, agricultural exhibitions, horses’ competition, awards for best farmsteads and best farming and other activities take place.

Mykolines is organised and coordinated by Rietavas municipality Education, Culture and Sport Department together with Rietavas cultural centre. Rietavas fellow men club is an active supporter and assistant in organising Mykolines. Local companies support certain activities of Mykolines.

Zemaiciu(Samogitian) unity day

In July 13, 1260 near the lake Durbe (In Latvia) samogitians (Samogitia – is historical land, western part of Lithuania), won the battle against Livonia and Prussia order. That was the most important victory of samogitians over the crusaders in XVIII century, having big influence for Lithuanian history. To honour and to remember this battle, since 2007 in Kaupai village, near Tverai Zemaiciu (Samogitian) Unity Day is celebrated. Demonstrational tournaments, ancient games, staged battles are taking place during the event. The event takes participants back in time and presents the distinctiveness and traditions of the area.

This is the private initiative of a business man Romas Miceika, who is also a leader of non governmental organisation "Zemaiciu union". The event is organised by non governmental organisations Zemaiciu Union and Zemaiciu Cultural Society, and supported by companies from whole Lithuania, but mostly from the western region of Lithuania.

Artists plenary in Tverai

Since 2008 every year the chairman of Zemaiciai Artists Union Virgilijus Bizauskas organise artists plenary „Zemaitijos saule“ (Sun of Zemaitija) in Tverai. Artists from Lithuania and Latvia participate in the plenary. Plenary is the lesson under open sky for all Tverai inhabitants. Open days are organised, when artists provide lessons on painting, stained glass, graphics, ceramics to all who come. Concerts take place. In the end artist make exhibition of the plenary, where the visitors can look, but also buy pieces of art.

Local entrepreneurs, local administration and community provide food and accommodation and help to sell pieces of art on the actions.

Electrification and telephone

In Lithuania the first telephone line was built in 1882 in Rietavas, and not in the largest towns, and it happened only 6 years after invention of a telephone. Telephone line was connecting landlords Bogdanas Oginskis and Juozapas Tiskevicius (54 km, Rietavas–Plunge–Kretinga–Palanga). April 17, 1892 on the Easter morning first electric lamp was lit in Rietavas church. This occurred after 13 years when electric bulb was invented. Also in 1892 in Rietavas, next to the saw mill, the power station was built and electricity was delivered to the park and palace. This was the first electric power station in Lithuania.

The celebrations of those two innovations take place in Rietavas every 5 years. In 2012 there is celebration of 130 years of the first telephone line and 120 years of Lithuanian electrification. The celebrations are organised and coordinated by Rietavas municipality Education, Culture and Sport department. Main sponsors are company "TEO LT" and Lithuanian energetic company. Rietavas companies are constant supporter of those events: "Plunges Laguna", "Sauslaukio statyba", "Rietavo turgus", "Misku ukis", "Plunges Jonis".

Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis polonaises route

To acknowledge 250 years anniversary (in 2015) of the outstanding historical personality M.K.Oginskis, promoters of cultural heritage from Lithuania, Belarus and other countries in 2005 started an educational and musical programme "Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis polonaises route". Scientific conferences, thematic expeditions, concerts, publishing of books take place in Lithuania and Belarus. Rietavas is one of the target areas. There is a committee formed, including cultural, local government, NGOs and business actors, which put efforts together for organisation of visits to Belarus and receiving international conferences and other events in Rietavas. Rietavas Culture History museum of Oginskiai takes a lead role.

Due to the initiative "Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis polonaises route", the round table was formed at the national UNESCO commission for the preparation of the programme for the celebration of M.K. Oginskis 250 years anniversary.

Conference rooms of a Technology Center as exhibition area

This Event took place in March 2012 and open up the education and conference space of the Technology Center Warnemünde for 3 photographers of the region to show there art for interested people. The exhibition showed pictures of different genres. Landscape, person and object photography combined with city pictures from New York and Life-Style-Portraits . The motivation of the head of the center was to invite a lot of people to get to know the technology center in a “Day of an open door” and to organize a good place marketing.

Benefit: The artists have a big audience; introduce others to their work and even the possibility to sell their art. While the technology center advertised their facilities for conferences to companies. Companies and artists can meet and also other entrepreneurs talk over the pictures in an informal way and get to know each other.

Open up an unused company space for an artist performance

The ITC Innovation and Trend Center offered 2007 an unused hall to an artist group for 2 public performances. It was an unusual performance location but fitted great to the equipment and costumes of this play. In this way you brought theater in a business area, where normally people work and not going to a performance.

Benefit: The artist had a possibility to show their play – because it is often very difficult and expensive to find audience spaces for little drama groups who have of course no own space. The ITC got new publicity through an unusual offer.

The ITC decorated the entrance hall with paintings bought in a regional gallery. They used also the experts for advises what would embellish the foyer best.

Benefits: The company use experts in art such as galleries for embellishing their rooms and the artist gets in this way a permanent audience.

Artist swapping gallery for shopping center

The artist association Rostock showed exhibits of artist from MV in the shopping center “Rostocker Hof” in April 2012 to celebrate their 170 year anniversary. Often regional artist have difficulties to find audiences for their art. With special events around this exhibition the artist hope to interest new people for art. One day an open public car designing with the jubilee motive of the association were offered, another day they invited people to portraits drawing. In addition they installed an automat in with peoples could throw their ID picture in and the artist make something creative out of it. The last day ended with an art auction where the money was spend to support young artist.

Benefit: The companies of the shopping center gets more shoppers through special events. The artist have a very wide audience and bring the awareness to their work and association.
